Per Wikipedia, Alabama is a state in the southeastern region of the United States.It is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama is the 30th largest by area and the 24th-most populous of the U.S. states.With a total of 1,500 miles (2,400 km) of inland waterways, Alabama has among the most of any state.

In 1902 Dr. Luther Leonidas Hill performed the first open heart surgery in the Western Hemisphere by suturing a stab wound in a young boy’s heart. The surgery occurred in Montgomery.
Peter Bryce is recognized as the state’s first psychiatrist. He was born in 1834 and died in 1892
Established: Alabama became the 22nd state on December 14, 1819.

The Alabama State Flag was authorized by the Alabama Legislature on February 16, 1895, by Act number 383. According to the Acts of Alabama, 1895 , the state flag was to be a crimson cross of St. Andrew on a field of white. The bars forming the cross must not be less than six inches broad and must extend diagonally across the flag from side to side.
Motto: Audemus jura nostra defendere is the official state motto. Translated it means “we dare defend our rights.”
