The North Carolina Colony was founded in 1653 by the Virginia colonists. – refer to Lords Proprietors and the Charter of Carolina. The Naming of the North Carolina Colony. Carolina is derived from the Latin name Carolus, translated as “Charles.”.

The flag of the state of North Carolina is defined by law as follows: That the flag of North Carolina shall consist of a blue union, containing in the center thereof a white star with the letter“N” in gilt on the left and the letter “C”in gilt on the right of said star, the circle containing the same to be one-third the width of the union.

  1. The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill is the oldest State University in the United States. 
  2. In 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first successful powered flight by man at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk. The Wright Memorial at Kitty Hawks now commemorates their achievement. 
  3. Know as “Fish Town” in the early 1700’s when Blackbeard frequented the coast, “Beaufort Town” was established as a seaport with the right to collect customs, in 1722.
